Top 5 Underrated Naruto Characters

Hey guys, Its HappyAnimeCamper once again… so, for my next post I decided to do 5 Naruto/Naruto Shippuden characters that I think are underrated in general.

Now, just to let you all know, for most of my posts, I’m going to put a spoiler alert. If you find it a bit troublesome that I can’t write a post without spoilers, It’s kind of impossible to talk about a character to their fullest extent. And I’m sure you know, characters’ development is shown over time, building up slowly so you can appreciate their strength and story. Just a warning! Lets get on..

5. Might Guy

“You have the gift of perseverance, and that’s what makes you a genius too!” – Might Guy

A funny, hilarious, strong, and stupid character who never gives up. That’s Might Guy, or “Guy Sensei” for you. Now, I’m pretty sure anyone who has watched Naruto knows that he isn’t weak. However, I think Guy isn’t given enough credit for his achievements. He took part in the 3rd and 4th Shinobi World War(SWW), in which his father died protecting him(3rd SWW).

He also is captain of Team Guy, which consists of Neji Hyuga, Rock Lee, and TenTen. Guy never gave up on Rock Lee, and if you will, Guy is almost like Rock Lee’s father, caring and teaching him as if he is his son. In general, Guy is funny, but is always for some reason absent during important arcs like Pain’s arc, Sasuke rescue mission arc, and kind of during the Konoha Crush arc, which I believe makes people skim over him, or appreciate his amazing Taijutsu skills, but then forget about him. He does have an epic fight with Madara, and almost defeats him, but then gets injured for life after that, which prevents him from showing any other potential. True, he isn’t a main character, but I believe there’s still a lot to learn and appreciate about him.

4. Tsunade Senju

Grow up… Death comes with being a shinobi… There are times when death is hard to accept, but if you don’t get over it, there’s no future…” -Tsunade Senju

Ok, before I say anything, those blue things in tsunade aren’t wings, they’re parts of Susanoo that have impaled her and she’s fighting with them in her.

So, I know Tsunade is Hokage. Pretty much everyone (other than Danzo) recognizes her as a decent Hokage who has a strong Will of Fire. She is recognized as the strongest medical-nin in the world, and developed a forbidden Jutsu, Strength of a Hundred Seal. She was elected Hokage after the Konoha Crush, helping Konoha prosper after hard times. She once again dealt with the recovery of Konoha after Pain’s Attack, and Finally for a 3rd time after the 4th Shinobi World War

So now that you have a brief background of Tsunade, I think she is underrated for 2 reasons. First, she isn’t given nearly as much credit as she deserves. She was the Hokage who supported Konoha after 3 major attacks on Konoha that left Konoha’s Ninjas and civilians literally smashed. She also doesn’t have many major fights that people really remember, her scuffle with Kabuto and Orochimaru during Naruto didn’t really show her true strength. I’d say her best fight is against Madara, where she really showed her true potential. But other than that, I feel like she is not given as much credit as other characters who are weaker and play less of a role in the series(like Hinata).

3. Zabuza Momochi and Haku

“Well? Cat got your tongue? Are you so surprised to discover that I’m human? Even shinobi are human. No matter how hard we try, we always fail to escape that simple fact. Well at least, I have failed.” -Zabuza
“When a personโ€ฆ has something important they want to protectโ€ฆ that’s when they can become truly strong.” -Haku

If you have watched Naruto, then you probably remember Haku and Zabuza. They are members of the 7 Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, and are the first main people who Naruto fights against. The most important thing about them is they are the ones who inspired Naruto’s Ninja Way, “Never Give Up!!”

I feel like they also represent the strong, talented, smart, but demented people in society. Haku has Ice Kekkai Genkai, and Zabuza has natural talent. But they were both outcasts in society simply because everyone feared their power, even though both(well, only haku) did nothing to deserve it. In essence, they were both ‘monsters’ to society, just like Jinchuriki(namely, Naruto). And this how society’s social structures are really weak and only let a small group of people excel.

2. Konan

One questionโ€ฆ Madara. Do you understand why we betrayed you? Because you are darkness, a world without light where flowers can only wither and die!” -Konan

This kunoichi faced many hardships as a child all the way through adulthood until her death. She was an Amegakure orphan, who along with Yahiko and Nagato, lived together, surviving by stealing food. As war orphans, they met the 3 Legendary Sannin, and got lucky enough to get Jiraiya to teach them ninjitsu(mainly because of Nagato’s Rinnegan). Konan always had a passion for origami, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when her jutsus were all based on paper and origami. Her main noticeable feature is her ability to fly by sticking together paper with her chakra in the shape of wings.

Throughout the series, she only puppets Nagato, as she does not want to lose anyone who is close to her again. She attacked Jiraiya under orders of Pain without second thought, even though she knew that their way of gaining peace wasn’t reasonable. But she only carried on because of Nagato. And once he accepted Naruto, she did too. As a character, she is too scared to lose Nagato completely, and therefore obeys him without question. But once she fights, she shows her skill in fighting, and was even almost able to defeat Tobi one-on-one, something that even Naruto and the Allied Shinobi Forces found extremely hard.

Overall, Konan is a extremely strong kunoichi who survived through great trauma and proves her worth, taking on strong foes, and in the end, died as an honourable shinobi.

  1. Sakura Haruno

โ€œEvery one of us must do whatโ€™s in their power! If weโ€™re going to die anyway, then itโ€™s better to die fighting than to do nothing!โ€ โ€“ Sakura Haruno

So, I know Sakura is a character who is often argued over whether she is “useless” or not. Sakura is here is because she has too many haters who do not understand the significance of her character development, and only look at her in Naruto, not properly analyzing her. But lets start off properly.

Sakura was shown in the beginning of the series as a useless kunoichi who is obsessed with Sasuke. 100% of her time went into impressing Sasuke and totally ignoring Naruto, which I detested about her. She relies on Naruto and Sasuke to protect her, effectively making herself a damsel in distress. However, once Sasuke leaves Konoha, Sakura realizes that since she was weak, she could not prevent Sasuke from leaving Konoha and therefore asks Tsunade to train her.

She becomes significantly stronger and goes through major character development, and also becomes more understanding towards other people, such as Naruto. She becomes reliable and actually contributes in missions. However, the only thing that prevents her from being on the from lines is that she is a medic ninja, and therefore is not allowed to get injured otherwise she would not be able to heal any injured ninja. However, after she unlocks the Strength of a Hundred Seals, she can finally fight on the from lines while saving the world. And she achieves amazing feats such as helping Naruto and Sasuke by punching Kaguya on the head so that she cant escape while Naruto and Sasuke sealed Kaguya away. She also healed Naruto and Sasuke after their final battle at The Valley of the Ends, saving their lives, and being the only person who is able to do so then. So, that’s about it!

  5. Rock Lee and Guy are so far my favorite characters! Lee is a genius of effort, which makes him so special among those who insist on blood and natural talent!

As a feminist, I always hope Sakura could be more powerful and ambitious! I really want to see more powerful women in anime! Thank you for your post.

      I agree!

All those characters worked to become super strong, literally going from “a zero to a hero”.

Also, if you’re interested in female-based anime, there’s a great anime called Violet Evergarden. It’s not 100% about fighting like AoT, Naruto, or HxH, but it’s about a child soldier(who is female and MC).

  6. I love this post so much! My fave characters are guy, kimimaro, and zabuza. So I am so happy to see them here! Totally agree that Sakura is underrated. She is a great character that was simply a subject to not the most amazing writing.

I’v seen a lot of hate towards her without much reason, so I thought I’d add her here. Apart from her, there are sadly a lot of characters that just get drowned out in all the hubbub of the 4th Shinobi WW.

      • 100% agree. Especially Shino, such wasted potential. Oo and kaguya. She was so strong, but got defeated by pretty much the first jutsu naruto ever learnt. ๐Ÿ˜†

        • happyanimecamper says:

Shino was practically thrown away, especially in Boruto!

Idk about Kaguya, it did take team 7 + one other person(spoilers so im not gonna say who), with many tries and they used another jutsu to defeat her. It was intersting how Naruto used that jutsu tho…

  7. Thank you for speaking up for Sakura. She doesn’t get nearly the respect she deserves.

Iโ€™ve never seen naruto but you sure are convincing me! Have you seen FMAB?

      I’m happy you’re getting interested.

I haven’t watched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood yet, I’m not watching any long anime until i’m done Naruto Shippuden, but it is on my watch list!
